Eating healthy on a budget can prove to be a great challenge. Especially when fast food chains and kiosks are almost everywhere we look, more so when we tend to be hungry.
Comfort and frozen foods are usually cheaper compared to the usual goods from your nearest health/organic shop. Overall, it seems like eating consistently healthy meals can only be achieved by people who have the budget and the time to prepare their own meals.
So what now? Well, there are ways to eat healthy food even when you are on a tight budget. Even if you don’t have the luxury of time to prepare them. Below are a few life hacks towards a better, and healthier diet:
Visit your farmer’s market an hour or two before closing time.
Instead of visiting the supermarket or some posh organic superstore, you will find better bargains from your nearest farmer’s market. Moreover, their produce is guaranteed fresh and you get to help and support your own community too.
You will also find more promos when it is almost closing time. Some goods are offered at a lower price or on a buy 1 take 1 basis. You see most sellers would love to dispose their stock by the end of the day to start off with a new, fresh batch tomorrow.
Always carry around a favorite fruit or a bag of nuts when you’re out.
When working or going to school, you might find yourself getting hungry by midday or during the afternoon. Without any healthy snack nearby, you might find yourself tempted to buy something from a fastfood restaurant or at a convenient store.
This is why you should always bring along a fruit or a bag of nuts. So whenever you feel hungry, you don’t need to spend a dime just to get a snack.
No time for cooking? Boiling and steaming are the solution.
We all understand how cooking can take much of your time, especially during the morning when you are hurrying to work. So whenever you have some extra time, make sure to peel, boil or steam your favorite vegetables ahead of time. The should be stored safely in the fridge or freezer until you need them again to make a dish.
It would also help if you cook ahead in large batches that would be enough to last you for a week. This way you can just store and reheat. You can even use it with additional ingredients to make a full meal. This strategy will allow you to save on cooking oil, gas, and of course, time!
Save your veggie and meat leftovers to make a broth.
Those extra carrot skins, tops, vegetable ends and leftover meat and bones should be collected. They can be used to make a vegetable broth that you can use to flavor up many kinds dishes. This will help you maximize your groceries by not letting anything go to waste, plus you can create delicious meals too!
If you have extra space, grow your own food.
If you are lucky enough to live in a house with a small yard, you can plant your own herbs and vegetables to save more money. Spring onions, tomatoes, garlic, peas and mint are relatively easy to grow.
You can still grow your own produce even if you are living in an apartment, but the options are limited. Of course, you need a pot to grow your plants, and the soil in these may not be enough to grow certain types of vegetables. Luckily, several leafy vegetables and herbs can be grown even in just 4 to 5 inches of soil – this includes lettuce, radish, basil, coriander, and chives.
